1. Be Decisive

According to Richard Branson of the Virgin Group, being ‘decisive’ is one of the most important skills a leader can develop. You should learn to look at the broader picture before you make any big decisions. Leaders should learn how to make decisions quickly in all situations including periods of growth and times of crisis.

Branson also suggests that a good leader should be confident and calm and “visible to his team.”

2. Never Hide Anything from Your Team

Toney Scherba of Yeti says that your team can always “tell if you are hiding something.” So you should never hide anything from them. you should be open with your team.

  • When you hide something, your team can become suspicious or uncertain
  • Let your team know about the current status and the way forward through a plan

He wants leaders to “share your vision” with your team, which helps in making you a better leader. Yeti is a well-known software development company whose list of clients include Google, Qualcomm, MIT, Britney Spears, and Hershey’s.

3. Bring Out the Best Out of Your Team

Max Levchin, the co-founder of PayPal, says that you should take steps to “get the best out of your team.” He says that it is the most important job of a team leader to get the their people to deliver their bet.

Some of his key suggestions include:

  • Knowing how to identify the weaknesses of each team member and getting around them
  • Knowing the strengths of each team member and making the most of them
  • Backing your team in all situations

According to him, a greater leader will know how to push, cheer, and take care of their team in times of growth and crisis.

4. Surround Yourself with Smarter People

Tatiana Lyons of ‘Your Creativity Leads’ says that you should surround yourself with people who are even smarter than you. A successful leader always builds teams that comprise of people having expertise in their areas. He suggests adding people to your team who can be smarter than the one hiring them.

A good leader also knows the importance of giving all the space to his team members to innovate and grow. This not only helps you bring out the best from them, this can also help you earn their trust and loyalty.

5. Learn to Listen, Not Just Hear

Courtney Beuchart of Eleven, Inc. says that great leaders don’t just ‘hear’ to their team members, they know how to listen. It is also important to help people understand what you say. This is because there can be a world of a difference between what you say and what people hear. According to Beuchart, this has been the “most important skill” her professional career’s success.

6. A Team Survives on Cohesion

Andrew Benett of Havas Worldwide says that there can be no team without cohesion. He suggests assembling teams to manage each assignment. It is important to carefully assemble diversity in both skills and backgrounds to achieve success.

He adds that you will find some teams to be better performers than others. These teams had greater cohesion between them compared to the lesser performing teams. Such teams spent more time together and showed genuine care towards each other.
